         Gas Turbine Probe Traverse

The two axis radial and yaw traverse actuator was developed from a requirement to traverse an aerodynamic probe in the high temperature gas stream of a turbine. The final traverse design resulted in high positioning accuracy, high stiffness and reliability in a harsh test environment. This has been proven in a number of installations for different applications from air flow laboratory test equipment to development test gas turbines. However, generally, the traverse provides an accurate and rugged means of positioning a wide variety of instruments for all sorts of applications.

150 mm Traverse

Yaw Module

The system consists of a two axis traverse (as shown) above, with a PC controller. The required instrument is fitted to the carriage yaw module, which traverses both up and down the actuator (via the radial drive) and rotates (via the yaw drive). If further axes are required, then additional actuators are integrated into the system.

Radial Axis Specification

The radial axis consists of a carriage driven by a leadscrew and supported by a secondary splined shaft. A stepper motor directly drives the leadscrew with optical encoder position feedback.

Radial Axis Range 100 mm to 350 mm
Leadscrew Pitch 2 mm
Motor Type Size 17, 1.8° step, 0.4 Amp/Phase, 0.24 Nm
Motor Drive Direct via HUCO coupling
Half Stepped Resolution 0.005 mm
Encoder Feedback 755 Series 200 line plus index
Encoder Mounting Direct on motor shaft via flexible coupling
Quadrature Resolution 0.0025 mm
Radial Accuracy ± 0.05 mm
Radial Traverse Speed 10 to 20 mm/s
Radial Load 450 N @ 10 mm/s

Yaw Axis Specification

The yaw axis module on the carriage is rotated by the splined shaft, via a unique metal band drive system, which eliminates backlash. The shaft is driven by a stepper motor and harmonic drive with optical encoder position feedback.

Yaw Axis Range 360°
Motor Type Size 17, 1.8° step, 0.4 Amp/Phase, 0.24 Nm
Motor Drive 50:1 Harmonic Drive
Half Stepped Resolution 0.018°
Encoder Feedback 755 Series 200 line plus index
Encoder Mounting Direct on motor shaft via flexible coupling
Quadrature Resolution 0.009°
Yaw Accuracy ± 0.05°
Maximum Probe Diameter 12 mm
Yaw traverse Speed 36°/s
Maximum Yaw Torque 8 Nm

If larger radial traverses than 350 mm are required, or traverses for probes larger than 12 mm diameter, then these can be custom designed to suit.
